Gladiolus, Cerise, Luxuriance, Asceticism...

What do all these words have in common? ....

They are all words that were winning words for the champions of the National Spelling Bee.  This year's spelling bee is a bit unique because Lori Anne Madison (6) was a participant.  She is from Woodbridge, VA and is "the youngest speller on record with the Scripps National Spelling Bee" (http://www.spellingbee.com/).  From watching a video about her and reading an article, she seems like a typical 6 year old but with an advanced reading/spelling level.  One of the things that establishes this is that "She learned to read at age two and is grade levels beyond her peers" (http://fox4kc.com/2012/05/30/an-adorable-speller/).  It doesn't seem like she was pressured into participating in the spelling bee or practicing for it.
Her story stood out to me because of my own love for words, reading, etc.  Unfortunately, she did not make it past the preliminary rounds because she " misspelled one of her two words [...] 'ingluvies,' which she started with an 'e' " (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/05/30/50-spellers-advance-to-national-spelling-bee-semifinals/).

Did you ever participate in a spelling bee? If so, what do you remember about it?
